Our readers make real decisions, and spend real money, based on what we publish. This page explains how we make sure our guides deserve that trust.
How we research
- We start with the questions UK households actually ask, then check what the best existing answers miss.
- We check facts against primary sources: manufacturer installation and user manuals, gov.uk, Building Regulations approved documents, Ofgem, the Energy Saving Trust, the NHS, the HSE and the Gas Safe Register.
- Costs are based on current UK retailer prices and published trade price ranges, and are shown as ranges because prices vary by region and job.
Safety standards
- We never instruct readers to open a gas appliance, work on gas pipes or flues, or work on fixed electrical wiring.
- Every guide involving gas or electricity includes a clear safety warning and tells you when to call a Gas Safe registered engineer or a registered electrician.
- We flag health risks such as mould exposure and asbestos in older textured coatings.
Updates and corrections
- Guides involving energy prices or costs are reviewed every quarter.
- Every damp and heating guide is reviewed each autumn before winter.
- The "Updated" date on a guide changes only when we've made a meaningful change to its content.
- If you spot an error, contact us. We correct mistakes promptly and say so where a correction changes our advice.
Independence
Some guides contain affiliate links (see our affiliate disclosure). Affiliate relationships never decide what we recommend. We don't accept payment to include or rank products, and we don't claim to have tested products we haven't tested.
Use of AI
We may use software tools, including AI, to help with research and drafting. Every guide is reviewed, fact-checked and edited by a person before publication, and that person is responsible for its accuracy.
