HomeWisely helps UK households fix the problems that make homes cold, damp and expensive to run, with honest advice about what you can do yourself and when you need a professional.
Why we started
Search for "black mould on bathroom ceiling" or "boiler pressure keeps dropping" and you'll find forum threads with ten conflicting answers, American advice that doesn't apply to British homes, and companies selling £3,000 damp-proofing to people whose real problem is condensation.
We wanted one place that gives the straight answer, in plain English, for UK homes.
Who's behind HomeWisely
Alex Morgan, Founder & Editor. Alex Morgan is the pen name of HomeWisely's founder, who prefers to keep their personal details private. Alex researches and writes every guide on the site, working from manufacturer manuals, gov.uk, Ofgem, the Energy Saving Trust and other primary sources, and checks prices against current UK retailers and trade rates.
Alex isn't a Gas Safe engineer or a chartered surveyor, and HomeWisely never pretends otherwise. That's why every guide is clear about where DIY stops and a qualified professional should take over.
What makes our guides different
- UK-specific: UK homes, UK weather, prices in pounds, UK regulations, UK grants.
- Safety-first: we never tell you to open a gas appliance or work on fixed wiring. We say clearly when to call a Gas Safe engineer, electrician or surveyor.
- Checked against primary sources: manufacturer manuals, gov.uk, Ofgem, Energy Saving Trust, NHS and HSE guidance.
- Kept up to date: costs and energy prices are re-checked every quarter, and every guide shows when it was last updated.
